CMEC: Census of Medical Examiner & Coroner Offices

Census of Medical Examiner and Coroner Offices

The purpose of the 2018 Census of Medical Examiner and Coroner Offices (CMEC) is to understand the structure, organization, workload, resources, and policies of the 2,400 medical examiner and coroner (MEC) offices across the United States. The 2018 CMEC was developed in collaboration with coroners and medical examiners across the country who helped the study team refine the CMEC instrument to reduce burden while producing meaningful, relevant, and timely statistics to serve the medicolegal death investigation community. The 2018 CMEC will capture emerging issues relevant to MECs and reveal how staffing, budget, and caseload have changed since the 2004 administration. Given the critical role of MECs to our Nation's public health and public safety communities, it is time to update our understanding of the funding, infrastructure, staffing, resources, and operations of MECs nationwide. Please participate in this important study.
